The main content of this chapter begins here.
Hao Ren returned to his seaside home at 9 PM, and Grandma was pleasantly surprised as she hadn't expected him back on a Tuesday evening.
Yue Yang was busy with work in his room and came out upon hearing Hao Ren's voice. "Why are you back today"
"I went to attend the parent-teacher meeting for Ah Zi's parents, and so I decided to stay here." Hao Ren looked around and asked, “Where is dad”
Hao Ren sighed inwardly; he knew that his father had left again.
When Grandma heard "Ah Zi," she immediately asked Hao Ren about it.
"It was a mid-term exam result presentation. Ah Zi's mom couldn't make it, so I attended in her place."
"Oh, how did Ah Zi do this time" Yue Yang also asked with concern.
"She did well; she ranked sixth in the class and seventeenth in the grade." Hao Ren recalled.
Yue Yang nodded. "Yes, Ling Zhao High School is one of the top schools in Donghai City. Being able to achieve this ranking is indeed commendable."
"Ah Zi is both obedient and smart! She looks like a child who always performs well," Grandma said happily, as if Ah Zi were her own granddaughter.
However, Hao Ren secretly blushed; Zhao Yanzi was really good at pretending in front of his grandmother. In reality, she rarely liked to study, often sneaking out to play around, and had consistently poor grades.
"I also think Zi is smart. Her grades won't be bad. She's such a good child; her performance must definitely have improved compared to when you were studying."
Hao Ren was speechless. He ignored their guessing game and went to the fridge for food.
"I'll take you to school tomorrow" Yue Yang came over and asked Hao Ren.
“Yes, I have to leave very early in the morning since I've been practicing basketball recently,” Hao Ren replied while drinking milk.
"Are you still practicing basketball" Yue Yang looked at Hao Ren with some doubt.
"There's a game in one week. I might play. Our Donghai University will be playing against Jinghua University," Hao Ren dug out the bread from the fridge and started munching on it casually.
"I know about the basketball team of Jinghua University, they are quite famous. When Jinghua University visited us last time, I was invited to watch one of their games; they were all playing very well," Yue Yang looked at Hao Ren with increased doubt, "How can you play against them I haven't seen you play basketball before.
"Oh, just for fun," Hao Ren waved his hand impatiently.
Sensing that he might have been a bit distant towards his son recently, Yue Yang continued, "The game in one week. Well, like this: I'll ask my father to shorten the trip and come back early so we can go watch you play basketball at school."
"Forget it!" Hao Ren put the leftover bread and milk back into the fridge, "With both of you coming to school, won't our entire school be in chaos"
Yue Yang pouted, somewhat upset, "How can you speak like that Mom has good intentions as well. She’s never seen her son play basketball before. I asked them to handle it discreetly."
"We'll talk about this later; whether or not I get to play is uncertain at the moment. Anyhow, talking about it now seems pointless," Hao Ren closed the fridge door and returned to the living room.
This child, why does he resist us so much I should be more concerned for him…
Muttered Yue Yang as she followed Hao Ren back into the living room.
"Hao Ren, Grandma has been missing Xiao Zi a lot these days. Why don’t you call her over to play at the beach and come visit us," called out the grandma.
Hao Ren thought about how Aozi’s family lived by the sea; who would be bothered with coming to the seaside But, thinking about how Grandma missed Zhao Rongzhuo (Aozi), he said, "Tomorrow I’ll go have a meal at Xiao Zi's place. Or perhaps I can call them and see if we could visit."
"It’s such an inconvenience for others to suddenly invite you over for dinner," commented Yue Yang.
But the grandma exclaimed, "Call her, there’s no problem!"
Hao Ren took out his phone and informed Zhao Hongyu (Aozi's mom) about it. On the other end of the call, Zhao Hongyu readily agreed to welcome Hao Ren’s family for a visit.
Then he handed the phone to Grandma, who was eager to chat with Zhao Rongzhuo and others whom she had not seen in quite some time.
Meanwhile, Yue Yang thought about how no matter what happened next week, she would find time for Hao Ren’s basketball game. While she always let him be on his own since childhood, after her scolding by Grandma when they visited Zhao Rongzhuo's home last time, she felt that perhaps she should care more for the child.
“Let’s go together with Zhonghua and don’t inform the school. It’s just a game to watch, no one would notice,”
The grandma finished her conversation with Zhao Hongyu while Hao Ren returned to his room to rest. He had come back today hoping to spend some time with his parents but found that they were already out of the country on business, leaving him somewhat uneasy.
Although he had two busy and high-level parents, Hao Ren never felt special as such situations are common among working parents, just like Zhao Rongzhuo’s parents.
Yue Yang and Hao Zhonghua devoted themselves to the scientific cause but earned far less money than a small business owner in an average-sized city, despite winning numerous awards and trophies. The beachside villa they own was bought at a discounted price during a significant drop in housing prices.
Luckily, although their income wasn't high, their jobs were stable enough to support the family.
When Hao Ren returned to his room, he opened the window facing the sea. Under the hazy moonlight, he practiced the Spirit Concentration Technique for two hours and absorbed nearby water qi. Thanks to Su Han's guidance, he had sorted out his meridians; consequently, he felt that the speed at which he drew in energy was indeed faster than before.
Amidst the sound of waves, he spent a peaceful night. The next morning, around five o'clock, it was still dark when Yue Yang drove Hao Ren to school.
The car belonged to Hao Zhonghua, a white Ford automatic transmission model which suited Yue Yang well.
Despite this, Yue Yang still drove cautiously, maintaining a speed of no more than 30 kilometers per hour and even reducing it by half when turning corners.
This speed was even slower than that of grandmas buying vegetables in the early morning. "Let me drive," Hao Ren said impatiently.
"It's alright, I'm just being careful," Yue Yang explained apologetically.
"Careful for what There isn't a single car on the road this early!" Hao Ren said irritably. "Stop the car."
Yue Yang slowly pulled over to the side of the road.
This woman, who was seen as a world-class female powerhouse by others, never dared to exceed 30 kilometers per hour while driving.
Hao Ren opened the door and switched seats with Yue Yang.
Click! Hao Ren smoothly shifted gears and pressed down on the accelerator; the car accelerated forward with a low growl. On this empty, early morning street, the speed quickly increased.
The engine's rumbling sound was deep yet powerful.
"Ren," Yue Yang said from inside the car, "I'm thinking of buying you a real car. Since we won an award this time, there's some prize money."
"Alright, alright, why would I need a car anyway You guys don't earn easily either; getting such an award requires years and years of research," Hao Ren politely declined.
Previously when Zhao Guang wanted to buy him a car, he had also refused, as he wasn't skilled at driving. In reality, his driving ability was comparable to Hao Zhonghua's.
"Tonight, I'm going to eat at Zi's house. My grandma and I will leave early in the morning. Can you come over after school" Yue Yang asked.
“Mm-hmm,” Hao Ren nodded while driving.
Looking at Hao Ren driving steadily in the morning light, Bing Yang suddenly felt that "Wu Zhi has truly grown up."
"However, Mom always feels that even though someone mentioned her as our future daughter-in-law, but Zi is still a bit young. It's mostly just playful talk." Yue Yang looked at his son, “Mom also brought along the class monitor who came with you last time to ask for an autograph; she seems like a nice girl."
Hao Ren almost stomped on the brake.
"To be honest, Mom thinks that girl is quite gentle and it’s not about whether she looks good or not. Mom just feels comfortable with her overall impression," Yue Yang continued.
“That really isn’t…” Hao Ren hurriedly explained.
"Mom was just talking casually; you know best if there's anything to it. As for Zi, I won't bring it up with her. But Mom’s eyes are usually pretty accurate; that female class monitor seems like a good match for you," Yue Yang said.
Accurate my foot, Zhao Yanzhi, such a poor student as her, was still seen by you as someone decent, Hao Ren thought inwardly.
The car rushed to the main entrance of Donghai University. Seeing that there weren't many students in the early morning campus, Hao Ren decided to drive straight into it and take a route through the campus towards the basketball court.
Driving steadily within this tranquil campus, at the corner about one hundred meters away from the Moon District Basketball Court, Hao Ren stopped the car.
"Parking here" Yue Yang asked.
"Yeah. Mom, you drive back home safely and I’ll focus on my basketball practice," Hao Ren opened the door and jumped out.
Of course he had to park a bit further away. It would be too much of a joke if Xie Yuxi saw her "idol" Yue Yang driving him over, that would shock her for sure.
If one was his idol and the other felt comfortable around him, what kind of interaction could these two women have
As he walked towards the basketball court, Yue Yang switched to the driver's seat and carefully turned the car around. Adjusting front and back on a two-meter wide road took her over a minute.
Hao Ren made his way to the basketball court, where Xie Yuxi in white tennis attire waved at him, "Hao Ren! You’re late today by two minutes!"
Hao Ren sheepishly smiled as he jogged towards her, “Sorry班長,今天起得有點晚。”
"Alright, I’ll let you off this time. Don’t be late again or there won't be any breakfast for you," Xie Yuxi said.
She had specially changed into a white tennis outfit today; different from yesterday’s dynamic yet casual clothes, she looked more professional and healthy.
In the distance, a white Ford was parked under the shade of trees near the basketball court. Through the car window, Yue Yang pushed her glasses up with a smile as she watched Xie Yuxi chattering away next to Hao Ren.ood behind them motionless. Luo Ying usually dealt with students and parents but had never encountered such a scene, leaving him unsure of how to proceed."Mr Zhao, since you have important guests visi...
